GUYS ASK IRENE

Dear Irene

Q: Can I wear a stripe shirt and tie with a striped suit? My wife says I can.
A: Yes, you can wear stripes with stripes as long as you follow the rules. There has to be a difference in the width of the stripes. Don’t try to match the stripes. You can also wear different patterns together. You just want to remember to keep it proportioned; narrow stripes with medium stripes or medium dots.

Q: Do men need a basic black suit like a woman needs a basic black dress?
A: No, actually a gray suit can be more versatile and not so formal. The gray suit can go from a wedding to a conference to a funeral to a night out – just change your shirt and tie to fit the occasion.

Q: I have a black tie event to go to, but I don't have a tuxedo. Do I have to rent one?
A: No, if you own a black suit that will do. However, make sure your wear a crisp white shirt, black woven silk tie, black leather belt, high shine black shoes. In other words, accessorize like you were wearing a tux.

Q: My feet are big. I read somewhere there are shoes you can get that will make them less noticeable, but I forgot what to look for.
A: Look for a shoe with a cap toe. The horizontal line across the top diminishes the length.

Q: I just purchased a dark gray pullover vest and a ribbed tee to go underneath. What sort of pants and shoes should I wear with this top?
A: It depends on the look you want to achieve. Very Casual - blue jeans and 'Doc Martens' type, or Nike Casual - khakis, dark jeans with loafers or casual tie shoes, or Business Casual - slacks (micro fiber or tropical weight wool) with casual tie shoes or dressy loafers.

Q: I am a male accountant, living in a warm climate. I sometimes want to go to work without socks. I've seen the look in the movies. Is this okay for me too?
A: Absolutely not, unless you work at the beach. Remember, you are a professional and should dress the part. Leave the sock-less look to the movie stars and be yourself, not an imitation of what you have seen on the wide screen.

Q: I'm starting a new job where I will need to be more business casual rather than casual (jeans) where I am now. I have a very limited budget but need a new wardrobe. Where can I shop?
A: Don't despair. You can find good bargains at a Marshall's or T.J. Maxx. If that is more than your budget will allow, find a good consignment shop. Most have clothes that are like new at an affordable price. Another place to shop is your Good Will store. Yes, they have wearable clothes and they are clean and pressed. You'll be surprised at what you can purchase. Just remember, look for basics that suit you.
